ONE DAY I’LL FLY AWAY (Mariposa on tour)

I am extremely excited to announce that I have been granted an AIDF fund (Artists’ International Development Fund) funded by the British Council and Arts Council England, to collaborate with poet Toni Stuart in Cape Town in South Africa. We will be developing Papyllon using silks, poetry, papyrus and paint to question what it means to be a ‘citizen of the world,’ and will performing the duet at the ICA and the Open Book Festival in August and September.

I will also perform an extract of Papyllon for COLLABO Bristol on the 23rd June (flyer above).

‘Papyllon’ is an exploration and celebration of identity, femininity, ethnicity, soul inspired by the four stages of transformation in the lifecycle of the butterfly.

Butterfly facts:
Around the world, the butterfly represents transformation, renewal, life, the soul.

The Greeks likened the butterfly’s constant flitting from flower to flower to the restlessness of the mind: constantly changing from subject to subject. The Greek word for butterfly is ‘psyche’ from where we get our word ‘psychology’ – the study of the mind.

The colours and patterns we see on a Butterfly’s wings are actually made by the reflection of hundreds of tiny scales covering their white wings… so their beautiful patterns are actually a trick of the light!

A snippet from rehearsals at the LDIF 2018 festival with the help of insight from company dancers David Evans and Patrick Ziza we rethought the Papyllon costume!
