Because we got ittttttttt!!!!
I am so excited, emotional, ecstatic to announce that we got Arts Council England funding to realise The Rainbow Butterfly as a 55 minute outdoor show!!!!!
And we have such a beautiful and epic team with us including three new performers Joana Dias, Jay X & Georgina Lance!!!! I am so so grateful to get to tour this beautiful piece and share its message with the world! The Rainbow Butterfly follows the story of Maja, a non-binary child of multiple heritage who would LOVE to be a Rainbow butterfly and fly all the way to the moon on a magical adventure! Inspired by the four stages of the lifecycle of the butterfly, this interactive children’s piece tells a story of transformation through the eyes of a child using aerial silks painted by textiles artist Zephyr Liddell and a storybook published, which we are currently illustrating and which was written by us at the company. The Rainbow Butterfly takes inspiration from traditional storytelling to weave a tale using aerial circus, contortion, and Contemporary & Hip Hop dance to create JOY, spark imagination and encourage creativity in our audiences. We will be starting the process off with two weeks in Leeds (from Monday!), followed by a week in London at the end of May, and then we will begin a mini tour and start testing in a library, a school and some outdoor locations! We will be holding sharings in Leeds on the 13th & 20th April in Leeds at 3 pm (If you would like to attend please reply to this email and I will send you the VIP location)
Check out dates to celebrate and get creative with us HERE! And we want to say a massive thank you and shout out to Arts Council of England and the National Lottery fund. Huge love and gratitude to Beverley Thomas, as well as to Yorkshire Dance, Open Source Arts, Kala Sangam, The Place, Cheshire Dance, Dance South East Dance, Dance East, and Artists 4 Artists… I am so so pleased this is finally happening 🙂 Thank you for reading and we will keep you updated in our once-monthly email about the project and what’s next!
Biggest loves,
Ella “Maya Gandaia” Mesma
