Next week we have a four day run at the Place with our new show, “Welcome to our House” created by myself, Akeim Toussaint and the amazing cast of 15 performers, and I am so amazed with the end result as well as the beautiful process!
Do you remember a few months back I shared a video of dancer Silas whom I captured on my instagram? Well I am so glad that witnessing that moment (catch it again HERE), became one of the start points for this piece and unfolded into something magical and powerful that allowed me to release both grief and JOY and feel held in the process…
The show is a beautiful work exploring the trials and tribulations of our individual lives, and explores different modes of relating, such as co-dependancy, aloofness, controlling… with the goal to all come back HOME to ourselves and hold ourselves as whole and complete exactly as we are. All of this takes place inside a figurative house inhabited by beings infused with their own divine spark.
It has been a beautiful process, and a JOY to be in a space where these awesome performers (and I) could be & bloom without the toxicity that can sometimes be present in dance spaces…
Next week the work premieres (and I am joyful that the piece is so jubilant it has been selected for the finale: a beautiful surprise as we really were process focused but as a result JOY manifested into a beautiful show!) alongside other awesome artists Kennedy Junior Muntanga, Alethia Antonia & Shobana Jeyasingh. ‘Welcome to our House’ premieres on the 4th July & can also be enjoyed on the 5th, 6th & 7th at The Place Theatre in London. Tickets can be bought HERE. It is an amazing line up and I hope you will be able to come and celebrate the graduation of these talented students and enjoy the POW evening of work! A huge big up and thank you to Akeim Toussaint for composing the music for this piece also… and Akeim and I are also celebrating our first successful ACE bid as Maya and Toussaint to create a new work on dancers Ffion Campbell Davies and David Evans this autumn which will premiere at Yorkshire Dance in Leeds (wahoo!) and then in London at The Place.
